Former York City striker joins Darlington

FORMER York City striker Jake Cassidy has joined Vanarama National League North rivals Darlington.

Cassidy was one of 13 players not to be offered a new contract by York during the summer.

His departure brought to an end a short stint with the club, having been signed from Stevenage last year.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wales Under-21s striker struggled to find goal-scoring form with the Minstermen, finding the back of the net just once in 15 appearances.

Cassidy now links up with fellow North division outfit Darlington, who were 19th when the season was cancelled amid the coronaviruspandemic.

Of the move, Darlington manager Alun Armstrong said: “Jake has the physicality that we’ve been lacking.

“Jake likes to mix it with opposing defences, and doesn’t mind the ugly stuff.

“Wherever he’s played, he’s been a good foil – the other centre forward has always scored plenty.

"He’s played full time up to now, and he’s fine about going part time. I’ve been talking to him for a few weeks now."

Cassidy said: "My last game was for York in February before the season got finished so it's been a long break, nearly six months without football.

"It's been nice to be back in training and I'm looking forward to getting going again."

Cassidy becomes Darlington's tenth signing of the summer and follows former York City defender Kallum Griffiths, ex-Minstermen goalkeeper Lucas Martin and midfielder Kevin dos Santos, previously of Pitching In Northern Premier League side Tadcaster Albion. Source: Jacob Kilbride and The Press
