Former Weymouth manager Mark Molesley has been sacked by Southend United.
Molesley has been replaced by former Blues' boss Phil Brown, following strong rumours of his departure last night.
Southend are battling to save their 100-year status as a Football League club, and are in serious danger of relegation to the National League.
Molesley's tenure was beset by a transfer embargo, limited funds and losing several key players.
He leaves with the club currently in 23rd of the 24 teams in Sky Bet League Two, five points from safety with six games to go.
Molesley joined Southend in the summer following historic back-to-back promotions with Weymouth, including the Southern League title.
Echosport understands several close aids to Molesley warned of the perils of joining Southend, a club seemingly in freefall with serious financial trouble.
Southend said: “The club last night terminated the contract of manager Mark Molesley, together with the majority of his backroom staff.
“We wish to thank Mark for the commitment throughout his tenure.
"The board recognise the management team worked tirelessly.
"However, whilst considerable further support was afforded during the January window, results on the pitch remained, unfortunately, inconsistent.
“Phil Brown, who previously managed the club between 2013 and 2018, will take charge with immediate effect.
“Brown, who signed some members of the existing squad, will be assisted by his former colleague Ricky Duncan (Head of Academy) and Craig Fagan (Under 23 Manager), who played under Brown when he managed Hull City between 2006 and 2010.”
