Darlington sign new winger

Darlington have completed the signing of former Middlesbrough and Forest Green Winger Junior Mondal.

The 24-year-old makes the move from fellow National League North side AFC Fylde.

Mondal came through the academy at Boro and was part of a hugely successful youth side that played in the Champions League. After his release, Mondal moved to Northern Premier League side Whitby Town and played regular first team football. After attracting interest from Football League clubs, Mondal went to League Two side Forest Green Rovers where he made 41 appearances for the club, scoring five goals.

Following his release from the League Two side after their failed play-off campaign in 2019, Mondal dropped down the divisions again to sign for AFC Fylde last season and made seven appearances before the season was declared null and void.

Mondal is the Quakers second signing in a matter of days following the capture of former Spennymoor and York City full-back Kallum Griffiths.

Speaking about his time at AFC Fylde, he said "I think it was just one of them things. There's no blame added to anything it's just one of them things where it didn't work out for me or the club so we're here now.

"I want to get my head down, get my confidence back after struggling last season and hopefully push on a get back to the EFL.

"I've been told by many people that Darlington is a fan friendly club and the fans bring them money to the club so I'm really looking forward to playing in front of them.

"That's the main thing really, if you're on the fans good side then that can only benefit you."

Darlington manager Alun Armstrong said: “I know Junior, who can play anywhere in a front three, from my Middlesbrough days.

"I was surprised when he was released by Boro, he lost his way a little bit, but then he went to Whitby where he scored a few goals and was watched by several Football League clubs.

“Everyone was massively surprised when Forest Green released him, and I was close to signing him last year but he went full time with Fylde.

“He still has aspirations of playing again in the Football League because he wants to prove people wrong and we’ll help him as much as we can.”
