Wrexham fans return for 5-0 pre-season triumph at Tamworth

Wrexham fans waited for 17 months of lockdown to watch their club play in the flesh; once they arrived at Tamworth’s Lamb Ground, they only had to wait 22 seconds to see a Wrexham goal. A Tyler French goal from a Paul Mullin cross put Wrexham ahead before the 30-second mark, and Mullin assisted again in the 15th minute as Jordan Ponticelli doubled Wrexham’s lead.

While Tamworth play below Wrexham in the Southern League Premier, the Reds put the Lambs to the slaughter in a statement result for the season ahead. Wrexham subbed their signing of the summer Paul Mullin off at half time to make way for fellow front-man Dior Angus, who scored a second-half brace.

Despite not scoring, Mullin’s two assists, along with a fierce strike that hit the woodwork, reveal his versatility and ability to strengthen Wrexham’s promotion push. Mullin tripled the output of Wrexham’s top scorer, Luke Young, last season, accomplishing the goalscoring feat in a literal league above Young's Welsh side. With a host of outrageous talent, and superstar North American backing, Wrexham surge towards the 21/22 season with high hopes and higher ambitions.

Wrexham’s co-owner, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, made his intentions clear in a recent interview with the Telegraph. Reynolds, who bought the club with fellow actor Rob McElhenney during lockdown last year, stated his three main aims for the season as ‘promotion, promotion, promotion’.

Wrexham suffered a greater disadvantage than other National League clubs last season, as devolved Welsh COVID restrictions kept fans from the Racecourse while other National League clubs hosted home supporters. Even so, the club held a slightly better record at home than away, winning ten games in Wales and nine in England. With restrictions lifting and the Racecourse’s red wall of fans back in the building, the reinforced club look formidable as the season approaches. Supporters and neutrals alike await Wrexham’s first game of the season, at home, to Yeovil, for a statement of intent, and a red Welsh masterclass.
