Chesterfield has recently announced that a small group of players who did not align with the manager, James Rowe’s vision of the team, have been furloughed. This decision was made after deliberating with the Professional Footballers’ Association.
The names of these players have yet to be brought to light but the club has stated that all the players who have been furloughed will be liable to receive their full wages and that they will continue to receive the club’s full support.
Following the release of John Pemberton, James Rowe who was formerly an assistant coach with Aldershot Town was signed as the manager of the Spireites in November. Rowe brought to the club his own vision of the squad and looked to make his own team by making multiple new additions to the team. With a bloated squad of over 30 players, Chesterfield tried to loan out some players but has struggled to do so. This struggle stems from the ongoing suspension and uncertainty of the National League North and National League South season. With already much financial stress over their shoulders, no club wishes to take another player in on a loan for a season whose future is on the fence. However, Chesterfield has stated that they wish for the National League season to continue rather than being declared null and void and shall vote accordingly. Since these players have neither been loaned out nor do they play a role in manager, James Rowe’s intentions for the team, they have been furloughed.
Chief executive, John Croot, took to an interview to say that this strategy has been implemented after wise consideration in order to reshape Chesterfield’s squad for the betterment of the club and save funds in the long run.
